Much of the waste removed today from site all over the UK is classed as contaminated. There are three categories

1. Clean/inert
2. Non hazardous
3. Hazardous

Clean inert: Inert waste is waste which is neither chemically or biologically reactive and It does not undergo any significant physical, chemical or biological transformations
Most general landfills will accept this material without any further treatment.

Non Hazardous: Must be treated before it can be landfilled

Hazardous: Waste which has properties that may make it harmful to human health or the environment
