Type 2 Crushed Concrete :Particle size is from 75mm max down to dust min. The bulk of Type 2 Crushed Concrete is of the larger end material (75 – 50 mm). This is a recycled sub-base material usually compacted down in 150mm layers. Type 2 Crushed concrete is made using a concrete crusher with the maximum size grid set to 75mm. That means that all particles 75mm or below will fall through into the material. The concrete used to make the material will mainly have come from demolition sites ( houses,roadsbuildings) and the make up of Type 2 is mainly pure concrete. Some type 2 does have some brick in its make. This material should be certificated.

Crushed Concrete

Type 1 Crushed Concrete:Particle size: 50-40mm max down to dust, this material binds and packs down tight. It is generally used as a capping layer on top of Type 2. There are a few variations of this material the higher end spec comes with a frost heave certificate. It is common to find this material being used under roads and driveways. Type 1 cruched concrete is made from recycled concrete

6f2 Material:Particle size: 100mm down to dust. This grade material was formerly known as 6f2 and is used for such jobs as haul roads and sub-bases and piling mats. Its main constituent is brick and hardcore but can contain a few foreign bodies as this material is not classed as pure by many contractors and producers and so is considered useful for temporary jobs.

Hoggin: Naturally occurring material: Main constituents are stone and sandy clay. The colour is usually an orange/brown but may differ depending on area of excavation. This material is ideal for country paths and bridleways as it has self binding qualities.

Tarmac Road Plainings: Particle size 20mm down to dust. This material is a recycled product taken from roads playgrounds and various tarmac’d surfaces. This material also has a self binding quality and can be used on tempary roads and is an ideal material for leveling the surface for site compounds. You may also find this material mixed with type 1 limestone or concrete, this can be known as eco- blend which is classed as another sub-base construction materials
