and may types of timber ( treated, prepared ,
sawn and various different). Timber is an
essential building material as nearly all homes

such as plywood or chipboard or recycled timber.

Treated timber: Timber can be treated if it is
likely to come into contact with moisture. This
timber can also be used in the garden. The
treatment usually chemical based can extend
the life expectancy of the timber and protect
against fungal and insect attacks.

Saw timber: Timber that has a rough surface to it. This is one of the building materials used where it will most likely not be seen for example stud partitioning, where it will be covered by plasterboard.

Prepared timber: Timber that has a smooth surface for painting and will usually be seen.

MDF: Medium Density Fibreboard which is a hardboard smooth surface material. A very versatile material and a very workable material. MDF can also be painted creating a smooth surface. Mnay kitchens and various panels can be made from MDF.

Chipboard:Basically woodchips glued together under high heat. Very strong and usually comes in board form. Can be used for base flooring or partitions.

Plywood:Thin veneers of wood glued together to form a sheet. Layers may be soft or hard wood. There are internal and external variations of plywood. Used mainly for panelling and shuttering. There is also marine plywood which is made using a waterproof adhesive. This can be used under water with extra protection.

Roof Trusses:These are pre made pitches for your roof. Roof trusses became popular in the early 1980’s and now hold even more popularity amongst builders. Their ease of installation make them a top building material for today’s trades. Each truss is perfect allowing for a flawless roof structure. Trusses can be made to measure, and with today’s technology any design can be made.
